Artifact

The artifact represents a connection to my culture and a reminder of the time I spent in my ancestors' country. It is a purse that holds a small amount of Belizean currency.  I got this purse when I went to Belize with my parents when I was in high school. We traveled all over the country visiting beautiful sites and loving family members. The hotel we stayed in was a cabana right on the beach. One day, my mother and I were sitting on the beach and a woman came up to us and asked us if we wanted to buy anything. The closest neighborhood to the hotel was at least three miles away. She was carrying two huge bags full of handmade crafts. I knew I had to buy something so her trip would not be in vain. I spotted the purse among the handicrafts and knew it had to be mine.

My dad later gave me some Belizean coin and I immediately thought to put them in the purse. The coins had the queen of England's face on them. This is because Belize was colonized by Britain. This is also why so many Belizeans speak English.

My dad's side of the family is from Belize. He came to the United States in the mid-90's looking for better opportunities, a year or two before I was born. My mom's side of the family is a little more confusing because my grandma was adopted but we know she's Native American, European, and African- American.
